Muscat Municipality Design Competition

The Muscat Municipality International Architectural Competition, taking place from 10 March 2025 to 10 June 2025, presents a unique opportunity to shape the future of Muscat’s built environment. This competition seeks innovative designs for an iconic architectural landmark that reflects the city’s vision for sustainable and forward-thinking urban development.

The proposed design should embody architectural excellence, seamlessly blending contemporary elements with Omani heritage while ensuring practical feasibility, environmental sustainability, and financial viability.

As part of this initiative, I am pleased to propose the development of Al Ghubra South, a key project that will contribute to the evolving urban landscape of Muscat.

H.E. Ahmed Al Humaidi
Mayor of Muscat

Mayor’s foreword

Muscat, the capital of Oman, is a city of rich cultural heritage and dynamic urban growth. H.E. Ahmed Al HumaidiOver centuries, its strategic location along the Gulf of Oman has shaped its identity as a center of trade, commerce, and cultural exchange. Today, Muscat continues to evolve, balancing its deep-rooted traditions with a modern, sustainable approach to urban development.

Covering an area of approximately 3,500 km², Muscat is nestled between the Gulf of Oman to the north and the Hajar Mountains to the south, shaping the city’s distinctive urban expansion. Over the years, Muscat has undergone significant growth, transforming from a network of coastal settlements into a vibrant metropolitan hub. This transformation has required strategic investments in infrastructure, green spaces, and sustainable urban planning, ensuring that development aligns with Oman’s long-term vision.

Muscat Municipality plays a leading role in shaping the city’s future by enhancing public spaces, modernizing infrastructure, and fostering a balanced approach to urbanization. Through sustainability-driven policies, the Municipality is committed to integrating eco-friendly initiatives, smart urban solutions, and architectural excellence into the city’s growth strategy.

In line with this commitment, we are delighted to invite local and international architecture studios to express their interest in Muscat Municipality’s Design Competition 2025. This prestigious competition offers a unique opportunity to design a landmark that symbolizes Muscat’s future vision—a structure that harmonizes contemporary design with Omani identity while ensuring practical feasibility, financial viability, and environmental responsibility.

We look forward to inspiring proposals that contribute to Muscat’s urban transformation and reinforce its position as a leading city in sustainable and innovative architecture.

H.E. Ahmed Al Humaidi
Mayor of Muscat
